چکیده

The paper offers an introduction and a road map to the burgeoning literature on two-sided markets. In many industries, platforms court two (or more) sides that use the platform to interact with each other. The platforms’ usage or variable charges impact the two sides’ willingness to trade, and thereby their net surpluses from potential interactions; the platforms’ membership or fixed charges in turn determine the end-users’ presence on the platform. The platforms’ fine design of the structure of variable and fixed charges is relevant only if the two sides do not negotiate away the corresponding usage and membership externalities. The paper first focuses on usage charges and provides conditions for the allocation of the total usage charge (e.g., the price of a call or of a payment card transaction) between the two sides not to be neutral; the failure of the Coase theorem is necessary but not sufficient for two-sidedness. Second, the paper builds a canonical model integrating usage and membership externalities. This model allows us to unify and compare the results obtained in the two hitherto disparate strands of the literature emphasizing either form of externality; and to place existing membership (or indirect) externalities models on a stronger footing by identifying environments in which these models can accommodate usage pricing. We also obtain general results on usage pricing of independent interest. Finally, the paper reviews some key economic insights on platform price and non-price strategies.

Matching with couples: a Multidisciplinary Survey

This survey deals with two-sided matching markets where one set of agents (workers/residents) has to be matched with another set of agents (firms/hospitals). We first give a short overview of a selection of classical results. Then, we review recent contributions to a complex and representative case of matching with complementarities, namely matching markets with couples. We discuss contribution...

Uncoordinated Two-Sided Markets∗

Various economic interactions can be modeled as two-sided markets. A central solution concept to these markets are stable matchings, introduced by Gale and Shapley. It is well known that stable matchings can be computed in polynomial time, but many real-life markets lack a central authority to match agents. In those markets, matchings are formed by actions of self-interested agents. Knuth intro...

One-sided Logic in Two-sided Markets

In this paper, I consider eight basic fallacies that can arise from using conventional wisdom from one-sided markets in two-sided market settings. These fallacies are illustrated using statements made in the context of regulatory investigations into credit card schemes in Australia and the United Kingdom. I discuss how these fallacies may be reconciled by proper use of a two-sided market analys...

Optimal Bidding Strategies of GENCOs in Day-Ahead Energy and Spinning Reserve Markets Based on Hybrid GA-Heuristic Optimization Algorithm

In an electricity market, every generation company (GENCO) attempts to maximize profit according to other participants bidding behaviors and power systems operating conditions. The goal of this study is to examine the optimal bidding strategy problem for GENCOs in energy and spinning reserve markets based on a hybrid GA-heuristic optimization algorithm. The heuristic optimization algorithm used...

Estimating Platform Market Power in Two-Sided Markets with an Application to Magazine Advertising

In this paper I estimate platform markups in two-sided markets using structural models of platform demand. My models and estimation procedure are applicable to general two-sided market settings where agents on each side care about the presence of agents on the other side and platforms set two membership prices to maximize the sum of profits. Using data on TV magazines in Germany I show that the...

Defining Two-Sided Markets

We propose a general definition of “two-sided markets,” identify the conditions under which a market is indeed two-sided, and, finally, discuss why two-sidedness matters for business and public policies.
